THE NUTRACEUTICALS GUIDE

Know what to ask.
See what you’re getting.

Make the offer fit the way you sell. Product ranges, subscriptions, trial offers and checkout setup should all be explicit before you compare providers.

Products and website

Share your product categories and ask for any ingredient, product or website-content restrictions in writing.

One-off or recurring

Make subscriptions, trials and repeat billing explicit so providers quote for the actual customer journey.

The complete offer

Compare processing and payout fees, reserves, other charges and your store connection options.

Show the range, not just the category.

Share the product categories you sell and the website customers use. Ask providers to identify the products and website conditions covered by their offer. A specific response is easier to work with than a general statement that a provider accepts supplements.

  • Provide a current product list and ask for any ingredient or product exclusions.
  • Ask which product descriptions, claims or website pages the provider wants reviewed.
  • Separate company registration country from the markets where customers buy.

Explain one-off and repeat purchases.

A single order, a subscription and a trial that converts to repeat billing create different customer journeys. Describe the journeys you actually use so providers can answer for each one. Ask how the arrangement is presented to customers and how changes are handled.

  • State whether you sell one-off purchases, subscriptions, introductory offers or a combination.
  • Ask about recurring payment support, renewal timing, failed-payment handling and customer cancellation.
  • Confirm whether each sales model carries different terms, limits or implementation work.

Put every cost beside the quote.

Compare proposals against the expected monthly processing assigned to this provider. Make any estimates visible as estimates. Include transaction and payout fees alongside the percentage rate, and keep reserve holds separate so you can assess the timing of available funds.

  • Ask for setup, monthly, refund, chargeback and currency-conversion charges as well as processing fees.
  • Record the reserve percentage and duration, settlement delay and payout schedule.
  • Confirm the MID arrangement, contracting company and the conditions for revising the offer.

Connect the application to your store.

Once you have a useful offer, turn the remaining questions into named application tasks. Share the document links the provider requests, resolve website changes and confirm a compatible implementation route. Keep the approved commercial terms linked to that application.

  • Ask for the exact document list and statement periods; explain any history you do not yet have.
  • Name your store platform and ask for the proposed gateway, plugin, API or hosted checkout connection.
  • Agree who tests purchases, recurring billing where applicable, refunds and the final setup.

Rules that shape subscription and product offers.

Two sets of US federal rules sit behind the questions providers ask nutraceutical merchants: how recurring charges are presented and how product claims are supported.

  • An online seller using a negative option feature, such as a subscription or a trial that becomes a subscription, must clearly and conspicuously disclose all material terms before taking the customer’s billing information (15 U.S.C. §8403).
  • The seller must obtain the customer’s express informed consent before charging a card, bank account or other financial account (15 U.S.C. §8403).
  • The seller must provide simple mechanisms for the customer to stop recurring charges (15 U.S.C. §8403).
  • The US Federal Trade Commission’s Health Products Compliance Guidance (December 2022) says claims about health benefits or safety require “competent and reliable scientific evidence”, and covers dietary supplements and other health-related products.
  • That is why a provider may ask to review your product pages and claims before it quotes. Ask which pages it wants to see, and keep its answer with the proposal.

Questions before you start.

Can one proposal cover subscriptions and one-off orders?

It can be requested that way, but the provider must say which sales models its offer supports and whether separate terms apply.

What if we add a product after onboarding?

Ask the provider how product changes are reviewed and whether you need an updated acceptance statement before adding the new product to that arrangement.

Should I request a gateway or a plugin?

Describe the store you use and ask for both the gateway and the connection method. A gateway name alone does not tell your developer which plugin or API setup is included.

Can I compare offers without sharing all onboarding documents?

Start with the business information needed for a quote. When you proceed to an application, review and share the selected documents with the chosen recipient.
